Indacaterol Treatment for COPD

100 Questions &
Answers About Chronic
Obstructive Pulmonary
Disease (COPD)
There is a new treatment for COPD, known as Indacaterol.

FDA approved:  1st July 2011

Brand name: Arcapta

Generic name: Indacaterol

Previous name: QAB149

Company: Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp

Treatment for: COPD

What is Arcapta?

Arcapta (Indacaterol) is a bronchodilator.

Indacaterol works by relaxing the surrounding muscles in the airways to open it up and improve breathing.

Arcapta is an inhaled medication to prevent bronchospasm in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which include bronchitis or emphysema.

Arcapta is not for use in asthma treatment.

Indacaterol is a fast acting once daily bronchodilator. It takes effect in 5 minutes and able to last for 24 hours.

Compare to conventional bronchodilator that takes 30 minutes for the medication to take effect and patients are required to take multiple doses throughout the day.

When taking the slower acting conventional bronchodilator medication, they did not feel or experience immediate effect and thought that the medication is not working.

Thus, this fast acting medication is good news to COPD patients.

Indacaterol is a long-term maintenance treatment for COPD.

What is COPD?

COPD or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. COPD is a debilitating progressive chronic respiratory disease.

COPD is a group of lung conditions such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis that cause a narrowing of airways in the lungs, making it difficult to breathe.

COPD caused by cigarette smoking and is the fourth-leading cause of death in the America.

Stop Smoking

Even with the introduction of this new treatment, stubbing it out is still the best COPD treatment plan.

Smoking is still the primary cause of COPD. Smokers are 12 times more likely to die from COPD than non smoker.

Second-hand smoke can also cause COPD.

COPD sufferers who continue to smoke will find that their lungs function deteriorate rapidly.

Stop smoking, it is really not worth to smoke. Better to be late than never. Smoking damage on the lungs is ongoing.

Out of Breath

If you are a heavy smoker and smoke more than 50 sticks of cigarette per day.

Imagine this;

• Getting breathless at a slightest exertion.

• When climbing stairs you feel like running a
   marathon.

• Coughing keeps you awake all night.

• Feeling tired most of the time.

You might be suffering from COPD.

The symptoms are similar to common ailments such as cough and phlegm.

COPD is not easy to diagnose, you need to go through a combination of examinations, chest x-ray and a lung function test.

COPD causes difficulty in breathing because the tiny air sacs in your lungs are damaged.

You would also be suffering from chronic bronchitis which leads to thick mucus forming in your airways.

In the final stages of this disease, your lungs failed and you can literally suffocate to death.

COPD is the most common cause of death in smokers.

Inhaler therapy using bronchodilators which help to relieve shortness of breath are often prescribed by doctors.

Warning Sign of COPD

• Breathlessness even with mild or slightest exertion.

• Abnormal sputum comprising a mixture of saliva and
   mucus in the airway.

• Coughing for more than 8 weeks.

• Fatigue and dizziness.

Most of us take fresh air for granted. Until you run out of breath.

Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is incurable, treatment is required for life.

Early diagnosis and treatment helps to prevent further damage to your lung tissues.

And now there is a new treatment option available.

Higher testosterone may equal lower heart risks

This may be great news to elderly men, Reuters recently published an article on the advantage of having higher natural testosterone in elder men.

Elderly men with naturally higher levels of testosterone are less likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke than those men with lower levels of the hormone, according to a study done by Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Goteborg, Sweden.

But, JoAnn Manson, chief of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, who is not involved in the study points out that there are other contributing factors other than Testosterone alone.

So, all you elderly men out there who experience low Testosterone level do not rush to boost your Testosterone level with Testosterone replacement therapy.

The trials are still ongoing and the results are mixed on whether Testosterone replacement in older men prevents the risk of heart disease and stroke.

While the scientist is still looking for the ultimate result, what you elderly men can do is to find an alternative solution by boosting your Testosterone level naturally.

You might want to consider taking;
1. Vitamin A
2. Vitamin B6,
3. Vitamin C
4. Vitamin E
5. Zinc
6. D-Aspartate

And also;
7. Exercise regularly
8. Sex

Vitamin A
Vitamin A increases the production of Testosterone and at the same time decreases the production of Estrogen in your testes.

Vitamin A can be found in food such as;

• Liver
• Broccoli
• Spinach

Vitamin B6
Vitamin B6 affects the Estrogen and Testosterone hormones.
Low levels of Vitamin B6 in your body may increase your risk in prostate cancer.

Foods that are rich in Vitamin B6 include;
• Whole grains
• Vegetables
• Nuts

Vitamin C
Vitamin C is essential in boosting your Testosterone level.

It helps in slowing down the released of Cortisol, a stress hormone by allowing your body to produce more Testosterone.

Vitamin C also reduces the Armostase Enzyme that converts your Testosterone into Estrogen and has been linked to lower the risk of cancer.

Vitamin C can be found in;
• Garlic
• Oranges
• Strawberries

Vitamin E
Vitamin E has been associated with the reproductive abilities, Testosterone and sperm level. Lack in Vitamin E may result in low fertility and low sperm mobility.

Vitamin E rich foods are;
• Avocado
• Egg
• Milk

Zinc
Taking Zinc can be useful in boosting your Testosterone level.

It helps in maintaining normal Testosterone level by preventing your pituitary gland when your Zinc level is low from releasing the hormones that aid in the production of Testosterone.

Other then taking Zinc pills, you can take foods that are high in natural sources of zinc.

Examples of such food are;
• Raw Oysters
• Cheese
• Turkey
• Brown Rice Oysters

Zinc also prevents Testosterone from being converted into Estrogen.

Zinc in itself turns Estrogen into Testosterone.

Exercise regularly
Forget about all the fitness and workout advice given by muscle magazine and talk shows.

Get off your couch and start to exercise regularly. At least 30 minute a day.

You can;
• Walk
• Jog
• Swim
• Cycle

What do you aspect from an elderly man?

Sex
According to German scientists, by simply having an erection causes your Testosterone level to rise.

Having sex in the morning will raise your natural Testosterone level and at the same time will burn a little fat for you.

The idea of this article is to suggest to you and other elderly men how to boost your natural Testosterone level naturally so as to prevent a heart attack or stroke.

Based on Reuters recently published article,

Elderly men with naturally higher levels of Testosterone are less likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke than those men with lower levels of the hormone.

There is no harm in trying to boost your Testosterone naturally.
