If you lost 32 percent of your hair, you are more likely to develop coronary heart disease (CHD) than those with a full head of hair, a study in Japan has suggested.
The less hair you has on the top of your head, the more likely you will succumb to heart disease.
Especially if you are balding between the age of 55 and 60, you are 44 percent more likely to develop coronary artery disease, according to the study published in the online journal BMJ Open.
The researchers examined six studies, three of the studies tracked the health of balding men for 11 years involving 37,000 men.
They also looked at differing grades of baldness: frontal, crown-top and combined.
Doireann Maddock, a senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: “Balding men should not be alarmed by this analysis as more research is needed to confirm any link between male hair loss and the increased risk of coronary heart disease.
It is more important to pay attention to your waistline than your hairline, hereditary hair loss may be beyond your control but many of the risk factors of coronary heart disease are not.
Stop smoking, maintain a healthy weight and being as active as possible are things that you can do to protect your heart.”
The authors of the online journal BMJ Open note that the explanation given by the research that link bald men with coronary heart disease is ‘unclear’ but said, “It has been previously suggested that classical coronary risk factors such as age, hypertension and smoking might influence both conditions.”
They also previous linked baldness with insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and hypertension.
And it has been suggested that male pattern baldness has been linked to coronary heart disease through chronic inflammation or increased sensitivity to testosterone.
Like what Doireann Maddock, a senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation has highlighted, you should maintain a healthy lifestyle with a balance diet and remain as active as possible at all time.
Pay more attention to your waistline instead of your hairline.
As for the studies, the researchers themselves could not conclusively link men hair loss with coronary heart disease.
