Snoring can be embarrassing to you and inconvenient to your partner.

You stop staying overnight with family and friends as you are worried they will be kept awake by your snores.

What Causes Snoring?

Snoring is caused by a partial blockage or narrowing of your airway passage from your nose and mouth to your lungs.

These condition causes the tissues in the passage to vibrate when you breathe, producing the noise when you snores.

Here are 6 reasons why you snore during sleep.

1. Age

Aging causes your airways to narrow which makes you more likely to snore as you grow older and the muscle tone in your throat becomes loosen making it easier to vibrate when you breathe.

2. Physical Conditions

When you are overweight or obese, your airways becomes narrow making fat people more likely to snore.

In general, men's airways are narrower than a woman that is why men are more likely to snore than women.

Other physical attributes includes enlarged adenoids and having a cleft pallet.

3. Nasal and Sinus Infections

Blocked nasal or airways due to colds, allergies and other sinus infections causes snoring.

These conditions make breathing and inhaling difficult causing the tissues in your nose to vibrate when you breathe.

4. Poor Fitness

Being inactive and not having enough physical activities can leads to snoring because of excess fatty tissue build up and poor muscle tone.

The muscle tissues in your throat become enlarged causing difficulty in breathing which leads the tissues to vibrate when you breathe.

5. Sleeping on your Back

Sleep on your back allows your throat flesh to fall back and relax, it will vibrate when you breath causing your to snore during sleep.

6. Substances Abuse and Medications

Alcohol, smoking and medication can cause snoring.

Their sedatives effects reduce the resting tone of the muscles in the back of your throat, making you more likely to snore.

Snoring Is a Common Condition

Snoring is a common condition affecting nearly 40 percent of adults.

It is more common among older people, about one-third of people ages 55 to 84 snores and in those who are overweight.

However, snoring is a sleep disorder that can have serious medical and social consequences.
